How Does Medicare Work?
Medicare is a federal health insurance program administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. It is divided into parts, each covering different types of healthcare services and products. Many people enroll in a combination of parts and plans to build versatile coverage for their various medical needs.
What Does Medicare Cover?
Medicare coverage varies by part, which may include:
- Part A—Hospital stays and inpatient care, home healthcare and skilled nursing care
- Part B—Outpatient services, medical tests, doctor visits and durable medical equipment
- Part C—Coverage included in Parts A and B (Original Medicare) as well as potential additional benefits for vision, dental and hearing care
- Part D—Prescription drugs
Coverage details, costs and network restrictions differ by plan, so comparing options carefully matters.
Who Is Eligible for Medicare?
Most people become eligible at age 65. Individuals under 65 may also qualify based on certain disabilities or qualifying medical conditions. Eligibility is tied to citizenship or residency status, and work history determines whether you qualify for premium-free Part A, though you may still enroll in Part A by paying a monthly premium if you do not meet the work history requirement.
How Does Enrollment Work?
Enrollment periods are time-sensitive. Missing your initial enrollment period, which includes the month of your 65th birthday and the three months both prior and afterward, can result in late enrollment penalties that affect your monthly costs going forward.
Medicare’s annual enrollment period typically runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. During this time, you can reassess and adjust your coverage, as plan details may change year over year. Meanwhile, if you already have a Part C plan, it can be revisited and changed annually from Jan. 1 through March 31.
Special enrollment periods are available after qualifying life events, such as losing employer-sponsored coverage or moving to a new address.
